Lesson Information
Lessons are $24 for each 50 minute session. Please email or call 314.225.5272 to inquire and make arrangements. Three programs, described below, are available. The usual is the Music Master program.
An acoustic guitar is preferred, but an electric, without amp, will be fine. For serious classical studies a student quality classical guitar is recommended. Please see the resources page for information about books and equipment.
Classical
A primary focus on classical pieces and period and music theory; studies aim to follow the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) grades.
Concentrated Rock
Designed for people wanting to know enough to rock; specializes in metal, punk, etc.
Music Master
Designed as a musical guitar method, covering many styles of music, music theory, and songwriting.
Grade 0: parts of the instrument, holding the instrument, positioning the hands, basic instrument maintenance, tuning
Grade 1: major open chords A-G, basic strumming, changing through simple chord progressions, warm-up stretches, musical terms: notes, steps, half-steps
Grade 2: major barre chords on the E and A string, introduce minor open chords (A, E, D), reading chord frames, warm-up slurs, musical terms: accidentals-sharps & flats
Grade 3: chord structure: diads and triads, advanced open chords (m, 7, m7), minor barre chords on the E and A string, introduce harmonics, other tuning techniques: harmonics, A base, D
Grade 4: blues (I, IV, V) boogie patterns, chord frame reading and sight reading, change through chord progressions that include open and barre chords, show varied strumming patterns: upstrokes, triplets, arpeggios
Grade 5: major and minor pentatonic scales (I, V), licks and improvization, fingerstyle introduction, advanced barre chords (7, m7), overview of treble and bass staves and their relation the guitar
Grade 6: natural major and minor scales(I, V), applying chord progressions to scalar modes, other pentatonic positions, analyzing song structure to identify improvization strategies
Grade 7: introduce other scalar modes, jazz chords and theory, analyzing musical structure to make own progressions, ear training introduction, advanced fingerstyles
Grade 8 and on: continuation of modal, chordal, and style studies

The Teacher
Kyle Walz is the guitar teacher. Kyle has been playing guitar since age four. His styles include classical, rock, blues, and jazz. By combining over ten years of teaching experience, his lessons are well suited for a wide range of students.
