Tip 1

Using a metronome can be a great help when working on control. Try changing tempos in songs to create different feels. Do not overlook being slow. Sometimes keeping a groove to 60 bpm is hard! Also, try a free drum machine program like orDrumbox (http://ordrumbox.com).

Most guitar players practices scales and arpeggios with a metronome. This is good, but a riff. This gets you thinking differently about your instrument and the music you play.

For pick users, try strumming a chord in between so many notes. Try doing a metal lick quick down picked riff or try letting an open chord ring.

For finger users, you use various patterns like in the classic Segovia and other scale studies. Those essentially go im, mi, ma, am, and ima with one purpose being to deal with moving from one string to another.
