Many guitar students reach a point where they, despite me telling them ahead of time, that many songs are basically the same. Usually shortly after this they take a rhythmic, melodic, or modal course of interest. But, who's 'usual'... Anyway I try making the point right out of the gate about this sameness being the reason that learning chords is important--they let you play anything. Here's a video that humorously sums up the point. He even brings in classical to the mix.
