Why I do not teach solos
Article Tags: solos
After a student is with me for awhile, they reach a point of wanting to learn the solo from a song. I'm talking electric type of playing. Some typicals are Eruption, Crazy Train, and Master of Puppets (sorry, don't sue me for that one). But I ask what I'd be doing while they learn. This is the segue to me explaining why I don't teach guitar solos.
Since as they learn the solo I'd just be saying, play this note then this, this part is fast, this part has vibrato, etc. It doesn't make a lot of sense for them to pay me for reading a tab or something to them. Then I ask a question, "Which sounds cooler, learning this particular solo or learning how to make your own solo over any song?" Not everyone has the answer I'd like and that's fine. But with some more discussion, they get the idea. You don't need a teacher to read a tab to you. Now, explaining and demonstrating a particular technique, such as fret tapping or artificial/pinch harmonics, is a much better role for a teacher. Added on: 2008 07 24

No, the title isn't a Beevis inspired joke. Though I obviously thought of that. Here's an article ...
