In online classical guitar discussions, Matanya Ophee is a name that in encountered frequently and with due reason. He's a solid authority on many aspects of classical guitar. Here's an article I came across discussing the history of how guitar is taught. Going back to the 18th century, he looks at techniques used by teachers to teach. The first example he gives uses pitch and tab notation (yes, tab is very old) and a 10 day regimen of learning the notes on the guitar. Interesting reading.
